Care of Gemsone Jewelry

Protect your memories and investment in your gemstone jewelry.  Whether you purchase gemstone jewelry from Art of Jewels or not, please follow the directions below to properly care for jewelry with gemstones.

1. Remove your jewelry before vigorous activities.
   
   
2. Don’t expose your gems to the chemicals in cleaning products, hair care products, fragrances and cosmetics because they can damage the gemstone.
   
   
3. When getting dressed, put your jewelry on last.   At the end of the day, take your jewelry off first.
   
   
4. Store your jewelry in a cloth-lined box or pouch and keep it away from other jewelry, which might scratch.
   
   
5. The best way to clean your gemstone jewelry is the gentlest way:
   
   
   • Before you begin cleaning, be sure to block the sink’s drain and place a soft rubber mat at the bottom of the sink to protect the jewelry in case of slips.
     
     
   • Use warm water with detergent-free soap and a soft toothbrush to scrub gently.   Then rinse and pat dry with a soft cloth.
     
     
   • A waterpik device may be used instead for a gentle water stream cleaning.
     
     
   • A lint free gemcloth will also work.
     
     
   • Ultrasonic devices and steam cleaners should be used with extreme caution for colored gemstones.   These devices can shake stones loose from their mountings or ruin the surfaces of softer gemstones.
